The Full Moon Party

"It's like 'Apocalypse Now' without the war!" some random traveller said to me, and it did feel a little like that with the hundreds of songtheaws all over the island, packed full with people, delivering us to the front line.

Every month almost 10,000 backpackers and holidayers descend on the Beaches of Hat Rin in Koh Phan Ngan for the full moon party and this month, despite things seeming a little quiet, was no exception. We headed there about 10 and the party was in full swing. The entire beach is covered in people, bars, food stalls and entertainment. The full moon lights the beach and music for all tastes is on offer. I think the Wicked Chicken should send a diplomatic mission here for further inspiration. It was like having a giant nightclub at your disposal. We kept exploring the whole place all night and never got bored finding new places.

It even had a sleep area for anyone who wanted to go for a snooze for a while and then go back to the party.

People started heading home from about 4am onwards. The boats from the pier back to Samui looked like some sort of evacuation. But even with so many leaving the crowd was hardly dented and by the time we left at 5a.m. there was no sign of the party stopping.

Pure entertainment - even if you just go to gaze at the madness.
